DON’T WASTE YOUR WORDS
“Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” - Psalm 141:3
We will be held accountable to the Lord for every idle word that we speak (Matthew 12:36). A prayer that I pray often is for God to set a guard over my lips; that my words would be full of grace and seasoned with salt. I want my words to build others up and to always speak life and blessings.
My mouth has been one of many areas that I have had to allow the Lord to sanctify since I’ve been saved. BC (before Christ), I used to be very loose with my words, and I could cut someone up quicker than a hibachi chef with what came out of my mouth. Whoever said “words will never hurt me” had never been on the receiving end of my words, because they would have definitely been wrong with that statement.
Now as a believer, I intentionally look for ways to build others up. I heard a quote once that said “if you see something beautiful about someone, tell them”. I never want to miss an opportunity to encourage others with my words, whether it’s the barista at Starbucks (which happens a lot) or one of my best friends, I don’t want to just think something about someone; I want to tell them.
I also want to be intentional with the way that I speak to and about myself. I believe that is one area we all should be very purposeful about.
How do we speak about ourselves?
Are we speaking blessings or curses over our lives?
Are we speaking life or death?
I encourage you to be deliberate and don’t waste your words.
